The course introduces participants to the reading of early modern manuscript sources. This includes palaeographic exercises using different scripts and source genres from the 16th to the 18th century - for the most part in German (letters, diaries, diplomas, lists, marginalia, etc.). Scholarly aspects of archiving are discussed as well as basic questions of source criticism and the development, preservation and evaluation of manuscript material. Furthermore, current historical methodology such as material culture research, analyzing egodocuments, the history of archival knowledge and practices, etc., will be discussed. close
