Biopolitics: The Politics of Life, Death, and the Human
Adam Brengsbo Fastholm
Comments
The course serves as an introduction to the concept of biopolitics and the discussions surrounding it. For almost 50 years, the concept of biopolitics has exerted great influence across political theory, transforming the way we understand the body, sovereignty, racism, colonialism, economics, neoliberalism, violence, vulnerability, and the category of the human. Today, biopolitics marks a vast and vigorous theoretical field wherein competing conceptions, provocative reappropriations, and scathing critiques continue to spark debate. This course returns to Foucault’s formative texts on the topic and examines the major debates that have followed in political theory, taking up the interventions of Giorgio Agamben, Wendy Brown, Judith Butler, Roberto Esposito, Donna Haraway, Achille Mbembe, Antonio Negri, Alexander Weheliye, and Cary Wolfe. close
