Elections, Voting Behavior and Political Parties

This seminar is about electoral politics in liberal democracies. The course provides an in-depth perspective of the concepts and theories used to analyze elections, voting behavior and the role of political parties in liberal democracies. What do we mean by “representation” in democracy and how can it be measured? How do electoral systems influence party systems? Why do voters vote the way they do (or vote at all)? Do we need an informed electorate for democracy to work? What is behind the realignment of party systems that we see in many countries today? And do leaders really matter in politics? These are all questions discussed in the seminar based on empirical studies from the readings. The first part of the seminar focuses on the institutional factors that shape elections, including electoral systems, political systems and direct democracy. The second part centers on voting behavior, including theories of voter choice, conceptions of ideology and public knowledge. The third part centers on political parties, including their typology, the role they play in democracy, and the extent to which political actors have agency in shaping politics. The goal of the course is to provide students with the conceptual and theoretical tools to develop their own investigations on electoral politics in a diverse array of countries. close
