MSc-GG031: V - Mineral and rock physics

In this course, students are introduced with the concepts of physical properties often used to describe minerals and rocks. The first half focuses on mineral physics, where the students will be familiarized with the basic concepts. The second half focuses on rock physics. Rock rheology and deformation mechanism will be covered together with a lab visit to see state-of-the-art deformation apparatus. Students will gain hand-on experience on the both the theoretical and application side of this important research topic.

Detailed curriculum is divided into two parts on:
I. Mineral physics
1. Fundamental thermodynamics
2. Heat capacity
3. Elasticity
4. Phase transition
5. Lattice diffusion

II. Rock physics
1. Rock rheology and deformation mechanism
2. Rock texture analysis
3. Lab visit on rock deformation apparatus
4. Practical on textural analysis with data
