Proseminar
Crime and Conflict in Latin America
Markus Hochmüller
Comments
This seminar explores continuities and changes of conflict and crime in post-Cold War Latin America. We will focus on the shift from political to criminal violence, emerging illicit markets, new social and environmental conflicts, the transformation of insurgencies and paramilitary groups after war and the legacies of internal conflicts, as well as the convergence of conflict and crime in the region. We also discuss the implications these dynamics have on security policies in Latin America including the militarization of public security. We further critically interrrogate transnational patterns (e.g., in the context of the war on drugs) and the role of governments and licit businesses in the (re)production of conflict and crime. close
