In this course we want to approach the topic of feasting, drinking and other forms of enjoyment in pre-modern Arabic literature and at the same time discuss the social embedding of these forms of sociality. What role did social eating and drinking play in Arab society at the time? Where, when and why were celebrations held and who took part? What dishes and drinks were served? What was cooked and what did recipe books look like? How was this portrayed in literature? What role did generosity and miserliness play? The seminar will focus on research literature to contextualize the texts and the development of social norms. close
