Cultural and intellectual History of al-Andalus
Ruben Schenzle
Comments
In this class we are going to investigate the cultural history and intellectual legacy of al-Andalus. We discuss approaches to this very diverse object and period of time – sometimes labelled as Islamic Spain, Muslim Iberia, the Islamicate West or more prosaic “the Ornament of the World” (Menocal 2002). We deal with different époques from the Umayyad emirate to the fall of Granada, including post-Andalusian Impacts in the Iberian peninsula and beyond. Intellectual achievements and crosscultural developments are highlighted in their historical context. A context that up to the present day is contested among scholars. Students learn to differentiate positions and approaches to the history of al-Andalus and analyse the diversity of intellectual as well as cultural debate and exchange of that given period of time. By changing roles and assignments, students are gaining didactic and communicative competences as well. close
