Practice seminar
Contextualizing Hayy b. Yaqzan
Ruben Schenzle
Additional information / Pre-requisites
The class will be taught in German only
Comments
The impact of Ibn Tufail's philosophical novel "Hayy b. Yaqzan" from the 12th century extends right up to the present day. Some scholars even see translations of the work from the 17th century as paving the way for the Renaissance and Enlightenment in Europe. In the course, we want to situate the novel historically and read it anew.
At the end of the semester, students will be able to analyze the text in terms of its intertextuality and the pedagogical, ideological and philosophical concepts it deals with and place it within the intellectual horizon of the Almohad context in which it was written. close
