This course provides an in-depth exploration of gender dynamics within the Middle East, examining historical and contemporary issues affecting women, men, and non-binary individuals in the region. Through an interdisciplinary approach, students will engage with diverse perspectives on gender roles, identities, and relations in Middle Eastern societies. We will analyse the historical developments that have shaped gender norms and roles in the Middle East. The course will provide insights into the impact of cultural, religious, and legal frameworks on gender in various Middle Eastern countries. We will explore the intersections of gender with other identities, such as race, class, sexuality, and nationality, and how these intersections affect individuals' experiences. As well as examine current gender-related issues, including political participation, economic opportunities, education, health, and human rights. Moreover, the course aims to investigate the role of feminist and LGBTQ+ movements in the Middle East, including their achievements, challenges, and future prospects. close
