Comments

China's economic and military rise has significantly impacted the balance of power in East Asia. On one hand, China has become the primary driver of economic growth in the region, serving as the most important trade partner for nearly all its neighbors. On the other hand, China's military expansion and increasing assertiveness in territorial disputes, particularly in the South China Sea and Taiwan, have led many countries in the region to enhance their military cooperation with the United States. In international relations literature, this phenomenon is commonly described as "hedging," where regional middle powers avoid fully aligning with either the United States or China, instead adopting a risk-mitigation strategy to benefit from both sides. Using the concept of "hedging" as a framework, this seminar will first introduce foundational theories of international relations (IR) and area studies to analyze regional dynamics. It will then provide an overview of China's role in the region's economic development, security, and diplomacy. Students are expected to engage actively in class discussions and exercises, as well as deliver a presentation during the course of the seminar. Class will be conducted in English, though Chinese terms and phrases will also be discussed to familiarize students with working with Chinese-language sources. close
