Comments

Located at the gulf of Naples in southern Italy, Pompeii was destroyed by the eruption of the volcano Vesuvius in AD 79. The city was founded in the 6th century BC by a mixed group (Etruscans, Greeks, indigenous), inhabited by Samnites between the 5th and 2nd century BC, and transformed into a Roman colony in 80 BC. Excavations began in the mid-18th century and continue until today, and have revealed about two thirds of the ancient city. Therefore, Pompeii is the best known and preserved city of the ancient world and allows, in an exemplary manner, to investigate the urban landscape and imagery of a mid-sized town with changing socio-political conditions over a period of 600-700 years. This lecture provides an overview of the topography and architecture of the city as well as the different contexts (sanctuaries, public buildings and squares, baths and spectacle buildings, houses, necropolises) of ancient imagery (esp. painting and sculpture) from the city’s foundation to its destruction. Particular attention is paid to the historical, social, and cultural conditions for the development of the city and its imagery as well as current methodological approaches and theoretical research debates. Recent and ongoing excavation play an important role, as the FU Institute of Classical Archaeology has been excavating in Pompeii since 2015. close
