Seminar
China and International Security

Comments
Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, security debates have taken center stage in international relations. A novel security lens has particularly been applied to the domestic and foreign policies of the People’s Republic of China, which has in turn been scrutinized both in relation to and separate from Russian military aggression. This course unpacks the various dimensions and issue areas that such a ‘securitization’ of China has entailed. By the end of the semester, students will be able to critically engage with security studies materials covering a wide range of issues and will learn to properly contextualise contemporary writings on China’s shifting position in the international security architecture. Thematically, the seminar will include sessions on – amongst others – the People’s Liberation Army and China’s nuclear arsenal, international arms control, cybersecurity, and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. Regional sessions on the South China Sea, China-Taiwan Relations, and Chinese security relations with Africa, India, the US and Russia round out the course.
After every second session, students will be required to fill in online quizzes, the successful completion of which is a prerequisite for successful course participation. The quizzes are pass-fail and will be based on the previous two sessions’ readings and discussions. The course will be examined via an essay (Hausarbeit) to be submitted by the end of the semester.
