PS-History of English II: Lexical Changes in the History of English
Berit Johannsen
Comments
In its history, English has seen many words come and go, or change the way in which they are used. In this seminar, you will learn about various phenomena of lexical variation and change in different periods of English - from the Middle Ages to the present day. After an introduction to lexical variation and change and the periods of English, I will present relevant data sources and methods to you. Then, we will consider four topics: 1. Innovation, spread, loss, 2. Borrowing, 3. Word-formation, 4. Semantic change. Each topic will consist of an overview session and another session, in which you have a detailed look at example studies. These studies should serve as inspiration for your own empirical research project, which you will work on in the final sessions of the seminar, and which will form the basis for your term paper. close
