Introduction to Social Genomics

Jan Paul Heisig

Comments

Humans are not only social but also biological beings, and as such their lives are partly shaped by genetic factors. What implications does this have for our understanding of social inequalities in health and other domains, of the intergenerational transmission of advantage and disadvantage, and of other phenomena that have long been at the center of sociological interest? The course aims to provide some answers to these questions by introducing students to the exciting fields of sociogenomics and genetically informed social science, which study how social and genetic factors interactively shape individual and social outcomes. We will begin with a discussion of Dalton Conley and Jason Fletcher’s book “The Genome Factor” and then take a deeper look at selected methodological and substantive questions. After completing the course, students will have a basic understanding of key sociogenomic concepts such as genetic confounding and gene-environment interaction, of research designs such as twin and polygenic-score designs, and of current genetically informed insights into the causes of inequalities in educational success as well as health and mortality. close
