Advanced Seminar
School-to-work transition across the world
Heike Solga & Alessandro Ferrara
Comments
Research on school-to-work transitions (STWTs) has widely demonstrated that STWTs
not only impact young people’s lives, but also strongly influence later career trajectories.
Comparative research on STWTs has accumulated a substantial body of knowledge on
the relationship between education systems and occupational attainment at labor
market entry. This comparative research has focused almost exclusively on STWTs in
advanced economies, while research on less advanced countries is still very sparse.
STWTs in less advanced economies face specific challenges, such as high inequality
and poverty rates, high shares of informal work, self-employment and agricultural work.
The seminar will focus on studies of STWTs from around the world. The discussion will
pay attention to theoretical approaches, methodological issues, and statistical analyses.
As the studies discussed are quantitative studies, a good knowledge of statistical
methods (e.g., knowledge on linear regression models) is required. “Active participation”
requires, first, that the participants complete the readings for each session and
participate in the discussion and group work and, second, that each student submit an
“open research question” (motivated and justified on 1-2 pages) during the semester. close
