Gender and Society: Inequalities in Education, Work, and Demographics
Xuejie Ding & Claudia Finger
Comments
This course provides an in-depth exploration of the multifaceted ways in which gender shapes and is shaped by societal structures and institutions. After having introduced theoretical approaches, key concepts and frameworks, the course will cover (mainly quantitative) empirical studies on gender inequalities in education, work, and demography. How and why does gender affect participation and outcomes in education? Why are occupational segregation and the gender wage gap such persistent phenomena, despite women's increasing advantage in education?
What impact do policies have on gender equity in the workplace?
Additionally, demographic trends and patterns, such as fertility, mortality, morbidity, aging and migration will be examined through a gendered lens to understand their implications for social and economic structures. Through a combination of in-depth discussions of the course readings, interactive discussions and group work during and between sessions, students will engage with empirical research and policy analysis to understand the causes and consequences of gender inequalities. The course will also highlight strategies and interventions aimed at promoting gender equity and social justice. close
