(HS) Introduction to Arabic Dialektology

The seminar provides an overview of the most significant topics in Arabic dialectology, including a discussion of selected Arabic dialects. The first part of the course comprises an introductory overview of the linguistic situation of the Arab world, followed by an examination of the classification of Arabic dialects. Furthermore, we will become acquainted with the characteristic terminology used in Arabic dialectology. Subsequently, participants will have the opportunity to engage in a discussion on emerging trends in Arabic dialectology, with a particular focus on selected methods of dialectological research, including an analysis of field research and its particularities. In the second part of the course, individual Arabic dialects and the Maltese language, including its dialects, will be discussed and presented within five dialect groups: Arabian Peninsula, Mesopotamia, Syria/Palestine/Lebanon, Egypt/Sudan and North Africa/Malta. In presenting the dialects, we will discuss their main characteristics and vocabulary, drawing on recordings and texts where available. The individual dialects will be suggested to the participants in the first meeting. close
