(HS) Introduction to Aramaic Linguistics

The course is an introduction to the general study of Aramaic languages. Aramaic is first attested in the inscriptions dated to the 9th century BCE. For many centuries, starting from the time of the Achaemenid empire and until the Arab conquests, it was the lingua franca of the Middle East. Nowadays, Aramaic still survives in numerous diverse and unique spoken varieties. The course will first introduce the linguistic features of older stages of Aramaic, highlighting certain inscriptions and Biblical Aramaic, and will then examine the development from Old Aramaic to Neo-Aramaic. The second part of the course will focus on modern Aramaic dialects spoken in Syria, Iraq, Turkey, and Iran today. Relevant literature, such as academic articles and samples of texts, will be provided in the course. close
