WiSe 24/25: Other-than-Human Ecologies on Turtle Island

Robin Wall Kimmerer writes in Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants, “In some Native languages, the term for plants translates to ‘those who take care of us’” (Kimmerer 2013, p. 228). The reciprocal practice of care Kimmerer elucidates is the essence of decoloniality and of cosmic frequencies oriented towards the infinite (Burkhart 2019; Ferreira da Silva 2022). If, as Manulani Aluli Meyer asserts, “Indigenous is simply a synonym for that which has endured” (Aluli Meyer 2013, p. 98), how does that which has endured inform historical understandings of healing and reciprocity in other-than-human ecologies? What does the dynamism of plant and animal life teach us about scales beyond the global and the planetary (Chakrabarty 2021)? Foregrounding Indigenous knowledges (Whyte 2018) and what Tiffany Lethabo King terms “Black Landscapes in Flux” (King 2018), this seminar will employ methodologies that include local storytelling and critiques of colonial-era maps to foreground a history of plant life and more-than-human consciousness. close
