WiSe 24/25: US American Wartime Nursing post-1865: Realities vs Perceptions

What do we think of when imagining a nurse? Despite vitally important life-saving work in each war the US has entered, popular perceptions of nursing have not been updated to match the reality of their role. In this course we will compile a timeline of wartime nursing history; marking advancements achieved by the efforts of nurses in each war they served in. To help frame this we will use narratives from the nurses themselves, as well as from their peers, and both text and visual media. Through this study we will see that the popular perceptions of nurses have not appreciably changed in well over a century. Yet over the course of this semester, we will gain an appreciation for what others are missing: that the experiences of nurses at war can be captivating adventures full of danger, camaraderie, and crucial life-saving medical work in immensely difficult conditions. To successfully pass this course, students are required to compose weekly précis, present sources and discuss ideas in class, work in teams, and take an exam at the end of the term. close
