Course language: English
Comments
The lecture course uses questions and methods from the history of knowledge (“Wissensgeschichte”) for an introduction to various traditions of Jewish knowledge. Using examples from antiquity to the present, we examine forms and contents of knowledge, how knowledge is produced and accumulated, who serves as carriers of knowledge, the various social contexts of knowledge, how knowledge is communicated and disseminated, and how knowledge is applied. We will not be treating “Jewish knowledge” as a fixed category. Instead, we will try to understand the processes through which contents and forms of knowledge are considered and accepted as “Jewish”. Thus, the lecture course both introduces to various traditions of Jewish knowledge and questions the parameters which have made it possible for them to be considered traditions of Jewish knowledge.
