16074 Advanced seminar

The Self as a Political Problem (Englisch)

Jan Slaby

Comments

Questions surrounding subjectivity and selfhood are at the heart of modern philosophy. In this seminar, we will focus on the intersection of phenomenological conceptions of the self and perspectives from critical theory and poststructuralism on the self-forming and -deforming potentials of social and political power. The aim of the seminar is to develop a working concept of the self as a multi-dimensional dynamical self-relation in socio-material contexts and to study it in relation to social dynamics of power and privilege. We will discuss case studies that single out dispositions and liabilities of the modern self that may give rise to regressive political orientations. In this context, we will discuss concepts such as phantom possession (von Redecker) and resentment (Fleury). One area of emphasis will be the affective dimension of selfhood, concepts such as a sense of self or self-feeling, in both a systematic-theoretical and a historical orientation. During my early preparation for this course, I look at work by Amy Allen, Judith Butler, Michel Foucault, Matthew Ratcliffe, Marya Schechtman, Sylvia Wynter and Dan Zahavi, among others. A fair number of these will be discussed in class, but the reading list is likely to change and expand over the summer.
