Seminar
Basque (and other minority languages) in the European sociolinguistic context
Roberto Dagnino
Comments
In this seminar, the sociolinguistic situation of the Basque language will be taken under scrutiny. This will be done by analysing document giving access to different points of view (history of the language, education, media, language policies, arts and cultural field, etc.) and taking in due account the political separation of the Basque linguistic area between the Spanish and the French states. A more general comparative approach will regularly be applied as well. In this respect, the Basque case study will allow for a comparative analyses with the sociolinguistic situation of other minority, small and revitalised languages in Europe in order to let emerge both the specificities of each particular case and other recurrent patterns.
The course will be provided in English, participation in German will be possible. Sufficient at least passive comprehension (reading/listening) in Spanish and French is recommended.
