Normative Powers (Englisch)
Matthew Rachar
Comments
Remarkably, human beings have the power to change their normative circumstances by mere utterance or thought. Take, for instance, consent. According to Heidi Hurd, consent is a kind of ”moral magic” that transforms the morality of behaviour, turning ”a trespass into a dinner party; a battery into a handshake; a theft into a gift; an invasion of privacy into an intimate moment; a commercial appropriation of name and likeness into a biography.” What could possibly explain such an ability? In this course, we will survey a variety of phenomena that involve normative powers--promises, forgiveness, and resolutions, in addition to consent--and theories of how they work.
