Introductory Practice: Dance Techniques between Mediation and Performance

Sebastian Matthias

Comments

What function does the plié fulfill at the beginning of the ballet barre and what makes the “round-robin” a meaningful practice in contact improvisation? In the codification of dance techniques and their mediation, practices become performative, which represent a condition for and result of different aesthetics of stage dance. Dance techniques can thus be seen as sedimentations of mediation procedures and performance practices that are based on certain ideals of the body, understandings of art and images of the artist. The exercise “Introductory Practice: Dance Techniques between Mediation and Performance” attempts to investigate these diverse interrelationships in various dance techniques. Using a rotating system of dancing, analyzing and researching together, ballet, gaga, Limón technique, somatic practices or contact improvisation and their formats of mediation are compared with their performances. Together, they will develop categories that appear useful for observing dance techniques and provide insight into their inherent ideals and concepts. No previous knowledge of dance is required for this participatory research approach, but it does involve active participation in the exercise, participation in the movement classes and independent research. close
