- Students of the Master's programme "Planetary Sciences and Space Exploration" have a higher workload and a more extensive term paper/examination (= 10 LP).

Admission requirements: none.

Qualification goals: The students have basic knowledge of the current state of satellite-based remote sensing (FE) in meteorology. They know the physical basics of the measurement methods and the mathematical basics of the inversion methods and can interpret and evaluate the diverse measurements and measurement methods.

Contents: Basics of radiative transfer theory, with focus on the aspects important for FE (absorption, emission and scattering of solar and terrestrial radiation by atmospheric components) - Presentation of different inversion methods (lookup tables, linear and non-linear regressions, PCA, neural networks, optimal estimation, etc.), - Overview of current meteorological satellite-based remote sensing instruments and methods, - Application of the learned knowledge to current satellite data, introduction to current data formats and programming development environments.
