In the interdisciplinary lectures, practically relevant content is presented in a case-based and interdisciplinary manner. The aim is to create a link between different topics and the material already learned. In the 7th semester, content on the topics of outbreak investigations and zoonoses, herd management, reproduction and sports medicine in horses is taught on a case-based basis throught various institutes.

In this course, an introduction to the methodology of systematic risk analysis in the context of consumer protection and animal disease control will be provided. Examples will be used to demonstrate the principles of risk assessment, (quantification), development of simple risk pathways/models, data collection, incorporation of uncertainty and variability, data simulation and interpretation of results. Students will be provided with the tools to develop and run own risk assessment models using commercial or open-source software packages.

The target audience is students who want to start academic work during their studies or immediately afterwards and publish a specialist article or dissertation. In addition to basic topics in the area of formulating research questions and preparing scientific papers (structure, literature research, formatting, correct citation, etc.), aspects of good scientific practice (GSP) as well as administrative, legal and research ethical topics are also presented. In addition, aspects of career planning and career decision-making are discussed in detail and various career paths are presented. The course material contains many references to other sources of information and publications on the topic

In their professional lives, veterinarians have to make economic decisions in various areas, be it in running practices, advising farmers and pet owners or in veterinary public service. The course is intended to provide insight into basic economic concepts. A focus is placed on the business aspects so that one can understand why farmers want to castrate their piglets themselves, when it is worthwhile for an animal owner to treat a cow, when it becomes worthwhile to purchase an X-ray machine and how the financial aspects relate to other factors influencing the decision process.

The ongoing digitalization and further development of artificial intelligence promise to change almost all areas of life. Digitalization is also finding its way into the training and practice of veterinarians. This development raises questions: what tasks will artificial intelligence take on in the near future? What is artificial intelligence (AI) and what are neural networks and machine learning? Why are we experiencing great interest in digitalization and AI right now? In order to take this development into account, the elective course 'Digital Veterinary Medicine' was designed. It is planned as a series of lectures by experts on various aspects of digitalization combined with interactive exercises on the computer. It shows what opportunities digitalization has to offer for training and practice. In particular, the following topics will be covered: automatic diagnostics based on image data and sensors, e-learning. You will be offered the opportunity to interactively apply modern methods of data processing and machine learning yourself.

Am Fachbereich Veterinärmedizin wurde im Februar 2024 eine Webcam im Nistkasten installiert. Der Nistkasten wurde kurz danach von einem Turmfalkenpaar angenommen und Anfang Mai sind 6 Küken geschlüpft. Alle Interessierten können das Verhalten der Vögel miterleben. Im Rahmen des Seminars wollen wir mit den Studierenden der Tiermedizin das Verhalten und insbesondere die Entwicklung der Küken untersuchen, ein Brainstorming durchführen und Fragestellung formulieren, anhand derer später die Daten annotiert werden. Die annotierten Daten werden dazu benutzt die KI-Algorithmen zu trainieren. Die durch die KI-Algorithmen festgestellten und quantifizierte Verhaltensmuster und individuellen Erkennungsmerkmale werden zusammen mit den Studierenden der Tiermedizin untersucht und ausgewertet. Basierend darauf werden eventuell mögliche Verbesserungsvorschläge identifiziert und Empfehlungen für Falkenmanagement ausgesprochen. Dabei sammeln die Studierenden wichtige Erfahrung mit den Wildvögeln und den innovativen digitalen KI-Techniken.

Im Rahmen der Veranstaltung erhalten Studierende erste Einblicke in die Vielfalt der tierärztlichen Berufsausübung und die damit verbundenen Karrieremöglichkeiten. Die Studierenden haben Gelegenheit, Fragen zum Studium der Veterinärmedizin zu stellen. Die Möglichkeiten bei der Wahl der Ausbildung im Rahmen der Pflichtpraktika werden dargestellt. Praktiker, Amtstierärzte, Wissenschaftler, in der pharmazeutischen Industrie tätige Tierärzte und Standesvertreter beschreiben ihren Arbeitsalltag mit den damit verbundenen Highlights, aber auch den Hindernissen. Fragen und Diskussionsbeiträge sind ausdrücklich erwünscht.

Recent developments in the area of machine learning due to availability of data and computational power promise to revolutionize almost every area of science. The driving technology behind this advancement is deep learning – a machine learning technology based on artificial neural networks consisting of many layers. Deep learning is capable of processing huge amount of data of different nature and already outperforming humans in many decision-making tasks. Biomedical research became now a source of large heterogeneous data, i.e. images, video, activity sensors, omics and text data. Leveraging the opportunities of this deep learning technology in the biomedical field requires particular set of skills combining thorough knowledge of necessary algorithms, specifics of biomedical data and designated programming tools. In this course we aim to offer students with background in computer science an opportunity to acquire the above skills to be able to deploy deep learning technology with a focus on biomedical applications. The course is structured as a seminar, where students under extensive guidance of instructors read fundamental books and recent research articles on deep learning, learn necessary programming tools, and produce their own implementations of computational pipelines in case studies using already published or original data. Starting from fundamental aspects of deep learning we aim to cover its applications to e.g. image data, time series data, text data, complex networks.
