The leadership literature is replete with examples of what leaders ought or should do to be effective in their jobs and to foster follower performance. However, from a follower perspective, leaders’ behavior is often not unequivocally positive. Instead, followers are in many cases confronted with negative and destructive leaders and leadership. In this talk, I will shed light on recent scientific approaches to the topic of destructive leadership and its impact on followers. Moreover, I will touch upon dark personality traits that make leaders less likely to successfully interact with their followers – although these traits might seem highly desirable at first glance. I will discuss practical implications of these findings and highlight what every one of us can do to prevent destructive leadership from happening as well as what can be done to limit its negative impact.
