On January 1, 2022, the speakership of the Berlin University Alliance changed from Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin to Technische Universität Berlin. Prof. Dr. Christian Thomsen, the president of Technische Universität, will be the BUA spokesperson until March 31, 2022.

The change in January was necessary because Prof. Dr. Sabine Kunst resigned from her position as president of Humboldt-Universität and thus also as spokesperson for BUA as of December 31, 2021. According to the schedule, the change would not have taken place until November 2022, since the speaker function within the Board of Directors, rotates every two years. The Board of Directors is the most important governing body of the alliance. Freie Universität Berlin held the office of spokesperson when the Berlin University Alliance was founded in 2018. Prof. Dr. Günter M. Ziegler, the president of Freie Universität Berlin, was the first spokesperson for the alliance. He held this office until November 2020.
