Freie Universität Berlin is a dynamic university that has recently again been named a university of excellence, now within the Berlin University Alliance, in the German government’s Excellence competition for universities.

Freie Universität Berlin is a leading research institution and has been internationally oriented since its founding in 1948. The university works systematically to expand its global networks. These include more than 100 university-wide international partnerships with academic institutions and five liaison offices on four continents. Around 17 percent of their students come from abroad.

As a classic full university it has 16 academic departments and central institutes offering over 150 degree programs across a wide range of subjects. Its main campus is located in Berlin-Dahlem, a district with a long tradition for outstanding science. Where Nobel Prize winners such as Albert Einstein and Otto Hahn conducted pioneering research, scholars from Freie Universität work closely together with regional, national, and international partners from the academic world, industry, politics, and society. The extent of its research in the humanities and social sciences is unique in Germany.

Freie Universität provides targeted support for young researchers. Many innovative and structured doctoral programs are comprised under the umbrella of Dahlem Research School, which serves as a framework that encompasses outstanding graduate programs. Graduate students working toward a doctorate can acquire excellent, structured training, as well as additional skills that optimally prepare them for a career in leadership positions.
