The Sustainability & Energy Management Unit of Freie Universität Berlin participates in the research project FUBIC: All-Electricity for Technology Quarters. The project accompanies the construction of the technology and start-up center FUBIC.

FUBIC stands for Business and Innovation Center next to Freie Universität Berlin Campus. It will be located at the premises of a former US military hospital close to the University at Fabeckstraße 60-62. The center will provide laboratories and offices for start-ups in the field of life science, healthcare and IT.

RWTH Aachen University is planning the energy concept as part of the research project, which is led by WISTA Management GmbH.. The entire energy supply of the FUBIC will be all electric and CO2-neutral using only renewable energies. Other project partners are BTB - Blockheizkraftwerksträger- und Betreibergesellschaft Berlin mbH and aedifion.

The Sustainability & Energy Management Unit investigates research issues related to technology acceptance and stakeholder participation. The experience of recent decades shows that the use of innovative technologies does not only depend on the development of scientific and technical knowledge, but also requires a constructive approach to socio-economic framework conditions and the relevant stakeholders. These include not only the direct stakeholders (those involved in planning and construction, users, owners and residents) but also the indirect stakeholders such as political actors, associations, companies and initiatives.

The high degree of innovation of the project is associated with challenges on all non-technical levels. Therefore, the process of introducing the energy system is accompanied and researched sociotechnically. The aim is to record and analyze challenges and potentials of the all-electricity project FUBIC and thus to promote the social acceptance process. The results will be used to identify transfer and adoption potentials for technology quarters in Germany and the EU region.

The joint research project runs in a first phase from January 2019 to July 2021, and in the follow-up project from February 2021 to January 2025. It is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi).
