Research for Sustainable Development
Excellent research and effective knowledge transfer regarding the causes of global problems are vital for sustainable development. Researching and developing innovative technologies as well as political and societal solutions to tackle global challenges are at the heart of sustainability research. Forward-looking content—such as the 17 Sustainable Development Goals—is now reflected in all disciplines.
Research related to the Sustainable Development Goals
The visibility of sustainability-related research projects will improve in the coming years through a new internet presence. The Unit for Sustainability and Energy Management is also looking to develop new networking opportunities in order to improve cooperation between various disciplines and stakeholders.
In 2021, 744 out of a total 1,776 research projects (approximately 42%) focused on aspects of sustainable development. Almost all disciplines contribute to sustainability research, but Biology, Chemistry, and Pharmacy; Political and Social Sciences; Education and Psychology; Veterinary Medicine; and Earth Sciences are especially relevant.
Sustainability goals in focus
Related to the 17 SDGs, more than two thirds of the research projects fall under the goals of Good Health and Wellbeing (243), Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions (195 projects), Life on Land (117 projects) and Climate Action (86 projects).
The area of research is, of course, only one of many building blocks of sustainable action. Read our SDG Compass (only available in german) to find out how we turn sustainability in terms of the SDGs into action across our entire campus.
