In the period 2023 to 2025, Freie Universität Berlin, with the support of the German Research Foundation (DFG), is funding the Open Access publishing of its members. Funding opportunities exist for articles in an Open Access journal as well as for Open Access books.

In the course of the new funding phase, the funding conditions of the Open Access Publication Fund for journal articles will be slightly adjusted: From January 1, 2023, OA publication fees that do not exceed the maximum amount of 2,000 EUR plus VAT per article will be eligible for funding. The old funding conditions still provided for a maximum funding amount of 2,000 EUR incl. VAT until the end of 2022.

The Open Access Publication Fund of Freie Universität Berlin, which has been in existence since 2012, supports members in making research results freely available to the scientific community and the interested public worldwide in the spirit of open access. In the period 2020 to 2022, the fund was financed entirely with the FU's own resources, after the eight-year funding by the DFG ended at the end of 2019. An overview of the FU's OA articles funded to date can be found on the platform of the OpenAPC initiative, and the information published there is updated on an ongoing basis.
