Irene Pfeffer studied Art History and Cultural and Social Anthropology at the Freie Universitaet Berlin and the Universidad Complutense de Madrid.

Her areas of specialization are 20th century art, art in Latin/South America, transcultural perspectives and methodical approaches in research of non-European art. Currently she works on her dissertation.

Between Visuality and Readability: Text Image Connections in Works of Brazilian Artist since the Concretismo

Irene Pfeffer’s research encompasses the artistic production in Brazil during the 1950s and 60s, where writing, language itself and the visual use of letters and signs became a programmatic aspect of the artistic language.

Language is personal, it evokes cultural memory but also individual memory based on different experiences in life of every individual, it always transfers meaning or reminds us of possible different meanings.

Using language in art at that time in Brazil remarks an interesting intersection of language and visual arts where she asks about the involvement of the theoretical debates around Brazil’s own cultural heritage, reflections, dependencies and liberations, its advocates and critics.
