Timeline Ideas Contest - Bioeconomy

The object of the funding is the identification and further development of bio-based products, processes and services, from their conceptual design to the review of feasibility and possible exploitation options. The funding is open to all topics and covers all areas of the bioeconomy as defined by the National Bioeconomy Strategy

Target group:

Scientists who can imagine a career beyond academia (e.g. in a spin-off company or industry).

Requirements:

  • The idea results from a science research project and indicates initial innovation potential.

  • Very raw, sketchy idea for exploitation.

Funding conditions:

The funding is divided into two phases:

In the exploratory phase, a potential product idea for the bioeconomy is to be developed based on initial scientific findings. The main elements are the conception, examination and consideration of various exploitation options. The property rights situation is to be analyzed and a proprietary property rights strategy is to be developed. In addition, suitable partners are to be identified for the feasibility phase.

  • individual projects12 months | 65,000 euros.

  • Project-related personnel expenses, consumables, travel expenses, patenting costs, and subcontracts to third parties for analyses and consulting.

In the feasibility phase, after the exploratory phase, fundamental investigations into the technical feasibility of the product idea is to carry out, and the exploitation strategy is to be further developed.

  • collaborative projects: 36 months | project-related expenses or costs in line with BMBF guidelines.
  • In case of founding a spin-off, trainings and coachings for founders are fundable.

Application:

Applicant is the university.

Exploratory phase:

  • Submission possible by February 1st of each year

  • project sketchMaximum of six pages (in German) with a description of the innovative product idea, including open questions on technical implementation and possible exploitation perspectives.

  • Short curriculum vitae and motivation letter

Feasibility phase:

  • Submission of an interim report seven months after the start of the exploratory phase project. Based on an evaluation, about one month later, the projects suitable for funding of the feasibility phase are selected.
