Internship
Application & Eligibilitiy Requirements
- Self-organized internship abroad which is related to your study program.
- Only internships that cannot be funded via Erasmus+ are funded. These are mainly internships outside of the EU.
- The minimum funding period for an internship abroad is one month (1 month does not equal 4 weeks! Correct example: 01.07.2024 until 31.07.2024. Incorrect example: 01.07.2024 until 28.07.2024). Internships which are shorter than the minimum funding period cannot be funded.
- The maximum funding period is 6 months.
- Full enrollment at the FU Berlin is required.
- PhD students are not eligible for funding in the category of intership, preparing final thesis, study abroad and direct exchange.
- Students organize internships, travel, insurance, visa, accomodation etc. themselves. PROMOS does not cover costs for visa etc. which may be quite high (for example visa for the U.S.).

Internships that are not eligible
- Internships in the EU with a duration of more than 2 months which are eligible for Erasmus+ funding. Link to Erasmus+ funding for internships: https://www.fu-berlin.de/en/studium/international/studium_ausland/erasmus_praktikum/index.html.
- Internships in Switzerland if funding can be applied for through the Swiss-European Mobility Programme (SEMP). Information on the Swiss-European Mobility Programme can be found at https://movetia.ch/en/funding-opportunities/student-exchange.
- Internships for which the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) provides funding are not eligible for funding. It is possible to apply for DAAD and PROMOS scholarships. In order for PROMOS funding to be granted, evidence of DAAD rejection must be provided. These include internships in:
- German embassies and cosulates,
- International organizations such as the EU, UNO, NATO, Worldbank etc.,
Deutsche Schulen im Ausland, Goethe-Institutes, Deutsche Archäologische Institute, Institutes of the Max Weber Stiftung, selected institutions of foreign cultural policy, school internships of students who study to become teachers.
The DAAD programs which cover these internships can be found on www.daad.de/auslandspraktikum (available only in German). Internships which can be funded through one of those programs will not be funded through PROMOS.
Required Documents
The link will take you to the online application portal. You can register via your ZEDAT account. The form is only available during the application periods.
Motivation letters should be written in German. We recommend Adobe Acrobat Reader DC to fill out the form for reasons of compatibility. Please refrain from submitting handwritten applications. Mozilla Firefox may not support the application form.
- Transcript of Records
As transcript of academic records, you can submit the printout “Übersicht Noten und Punkte” from the Campus Management system. Alternatively, you can submit a transcript which has been signed by your faculty’s examination office. Masters students must additionally submit their undergraduate degree certificate and transcript for their undergraduate degree.
- Certificate of Enrollment
You are required to submit a certificate of enrollment at FU Berlin.
- Proof of Nationality
Please submit a copy of an identity card or passport.
Letters of recommendations can be completed by a lecturer/professor with the help of our form. Please note that language teachers or non-FU researchers are not accepted. The document, written in English or German, should be submitted along with the other application documents by the applicant or sent to us directly by the assessor. To fill in the form, we recommend downloading the form and only then entering the rating. If the ratings are entered first and the form is saved afterwards, they are often not transmitted.
Skills in the language the host institution uses in the work place must be proven by the applicant. The DAAD language certificates that are issued by the FU Berlin’s language center can be used for this purpose. Alternatively, you can submit a TOEFL or IELTS language test. If the language of your internship differs from the local language of the host country, please see the website with information on language certificate for further instructions.
In any case, appropriate supporting documents must be included, otherwise your application will not be considered. Language certificates should not be older than two years. Native speakers can submit their high school diploma or other proof that they have completed an academic degree in the respective language.
- Internship contract or confirmation by the guest institution
The contract/confirmation should contain the following information:
- name and place of the institution
- name and date of birth of the intern
- contact person at the institution
- duration of the internship (dd.mm.yyyy - dd.mm.yyyy)
- signature and stamp
