Language Courses

Application & Eligibilitiy Requirements

  • Self organized language courses at state universities (or other established language institutes) abroad which consist of at least 25 hours per week and are related to the respective study programs of the applicants.
  • Language courses must be at least three weeks and can be funded for up to six months which is the maximum funding period. 
  • Longer language courses can only be funded up until the maximum funding period. Projects which are shorter than the minimum funding period of three weeks cannot be funded.
  • Full enrollment at the FU Berlin is required. 
  • Basic knowledge of the language to be studied. Beginner courses cannot be funded.

Motivation letters should be written in German. Only justified cases give student’s the permission to write in English. We recommend Adobe Acrobat Reader DC to fill out the form for reasons of compatibility. Please refrain from submitting handwritten applications. Mozilla Firefox may not support the application form.

  • Transcript of Records

As transcript of academic records, you can submit the printout “Übersicht Noten und Punkte” from the Campus Management system. Alternatively, you can submit a transcript which has been signed by your faculty’s examination office. Graduate students must additionally submit their undergraduate degree certificate. Doctoral candidates submit a copy of their Bachelor's and Master's degree certificates.

  • Certificate of Enrollment

You are required to submit a proof of enrollment at the FU for your study abroad.

  • Proof of Nationality

We kindly ask you to submit a copy of an identity card or passport.

Letters of recommendations can be completed by a lecturer/professor with the help of our form. Please note that language teachers or non-FU researchers are not accepted. The document, written in English or German, should be submitted along with the other application documents by the applicant or sent to us directly by your assessor. To fill in the form, we recommend downloading the form and only then entering the rating. If the ratings are entered first and the form is saved afterwards, they are often not transmitted.

Proof of language skills in the language to be learned and, if different, in the language of instruction must be provided. The DAAD language certificates that are issued by the FU Berlin’s language center can be used for this purpose. Alternatively, you can submit a TOEFL or IELTS language test. If the language of your study project deviates from the national language of the host country, please click here.

In any case, appropriate supporting documents must be included, otherwise your application will not be considered. Language certificates should not be older than two years. Native speakers can submit their high school diploma or other proof that they have completed an academic degree in the respective language.

  • Proof of the language course you wish to attend
The course description must be included with your application to provide proof of course content. The course description must include both the length of the course (minimum 3 weeks) and the number of study hours per week (minimum 25 hours per week). Should you have already registered for the course at the time of your application, you can additionally include your confirmation of course registration. However, we do not require that you have registered for the course at the time of application.
