Humanities in an Interdisciplinary Context (GiK)
- Minor subject in a combi bachelor
14195 Berlin
The 60 CP Minor subject 'Humanities in an Interdisciplinary Context' – German abbreviation is 'GiK' – has a special status in the subject oeuvre of the Department of Philosophy and Humanities.
In contrast to a classical field of study, which trains in depth and breadth within one discipline, GiK offers the possibility of a freer study, which extends beyond individual subjects or institutes of the department and is primarily guided by one's own interests and/or interdisciplinary research fields. In this way, GiK reflects the characteristics of modern research and collaboration in the humanities intensively in the course of study.
The program begins with a basic phase, which is the same for all students, and which provides initial contact with various humanities subjects as well as an introduction to the history and genesis of the humanities and their work. This is followed by the advanced phase. Here, students choose one of six profile areas, whose thematic orientation ranges from a completely free study over classical subject areas to more recent research directions in the humanities. The advanced phase The build-up phase concludes with a module from another profile area.
The following profile areas are available for choice:
- Humanities interdisciplinary
- Aesthetics
- Rhetoric
- Gender and Diversity/Intersectionality
- History of Knowledge
- Digital Humanities/Digitality
GiK can be chosen as a supplementary Minor subject in the amount of 60 credit points (ECTS) by students who are studying in the combi bachelor program without teacher training and whose Major subject is located in the Department of Philosophy and Humanities.
The humanities at Freie Universität Berlin enjoy an excellent reputation in the academic world. For many years, they have ranked among the best in national and international comparisons.
In addition to the well-known subjects such as Philosophy and German Language and Literature, the university's largest department also includes more unusual subjects and institutes, such as Film Studies, Byzantine Studies, and Modern Greek Studies. In addition to the research that takes place within the institutes at the various chairs, there is a large number of participations in interdisciplinary research associations (e.g. Collaborative Research Centres, Clusters of Excellence), which work in cooperation across the boundaries of institutes and subjects. These circumstances offer the best conditions for a diverse and research-oriented study program.
Last but not least, the Philological Library of Freie Universität Berlin, with its very extensive collection of books, offers students ideal conditions for study and also research purposes. In addition to the good equipment of the Philological Library, the long opening hours should also be emphasized, which considerably facilitate literature acquisition and research.
As a 60 CP Minor subject, 'Humanities in an Interdisciplinary Context' (GiK) is combined with a Major subject. The Major subject must be located in the Department of Philosophy and Humanities and can only be studied without teacher training.
The study of GiK is divided into a basic phase of 20 LP and an advanced phase of 40 LP, of which at least 30 CP should be dedicated to personal profile development.
The exact structure and sequence of the program is regulated by the study regulations. They contain detailed descriptions of the contents and qualification goals of each individual module and an exemplary study plan. The examination regulations define the type and requirements of the examination achievements of the modules and the Bachelor examination. The regulations specify the credit points for each module or course as well as the workload in time hours for the entire study program.
The language of instruction is mainly German. Courses, especially those in foreign language studies, can also be offered in the respective language.

Graduates possess scientific and practical knowledge and skills that qualify them for a professional occupation or a further course of study.
Since GiK is studied as a Minor subject within the framework of a combi bachelor program, it is primarily the chosen core subject that shapes the professional qualification, but GiK can broaden and deepen this qualification depending on the chosen profile area and strengthen interdisciplinary and linked thinking. GiK offers the opportunity to think outside the box and identify potential for one's own work in other fields as well.
A master's degree and, if applicable, a doctorate are prerequisites for managerial positions or employment in research and teaching.
