The Bachelor's degree program in Geographical Sciences at Freie Universität Berlin offers an interdisciplinary education for students interested in geography in all its breadth and diversity: from physical geography, remote sensing, modeling of human-environment interactions to spatial planning and human geography issues. Our program is designed to provide in-depth knowledge of spatial structures, processes and dynamics in different environments and with a view to current issues and challenges. To this end, the program provides students with tools for analyzing and solving geographical issues.

In the course of their studies, students deal with a variety of subject areas, including

  • Physical Geography: Explores processes and interactions in the natural environment and their changes over time from climate and vegetation to soil formation and geomorphology and applies knowledge to human-environment interactions.
  • Human Geography: Critical theoretical knowledge of the relationships between society and the environment, including migration, social inequalities and socio-ecological transformation, and their reflection in research practice.
  • Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing: Learning how to use modern technologies to collect, analyze and visualize geographical data.
  • Spatial and environmental planning: Development of strategies for the sustainable use and design of spaces, taking into account ecological, economic and social aspects.
  • Modeling of human-environment interactions: Learning spatially integrated methods for understanding socio-ecological land systems, understanding how humans use land and the potential impacts of land use on the environment and society.

Practice-oriented studies: The Bachelor's degree course in Geographical Sciences is characterized by a high number of field seminars, which offer students the opportunity to learn geographical concepts and methods in a practice-oriented way and apply them in the field. From excursions and field work placements in Berlin and the surrounding area to field research trips to other European and non-European countries such as Spain or Namibia, the high proportion of practical experience enables students to deepen their understanding of geographical phenomena and processes and develop practical skills in the field. Overall, the many practice-oriented courses on the Bachelor's degree program in Geographical Sciences contribute to a unique learning environment that combines theoretical knowledge with practical application.
