1. Terminating your lease

Many lease agreements are for an indefinite term and cannot be terminated at will. To avoid incurring unnecessary costs, you should check what conditions apply to terminating your lease before you sign it. If you have any doubts, contact your landlord for information.

2. De-registering as a resident of Berlin

If you have officially registered in Berlin (also see “During your stay, 1. Registration”), you are required to de-register no earlier than seven days before you move out and no later than 14 days afterward.

To do this, you will need to fill out another registration office form and submit it to the appropriate office in person or by mail.

3. Closing your bank account

If you do not plan to return to Germany in the foreseeable future, it is recommended that you close your German accounts in order to avoid incurring monthly account fees. Your bank or Sparkasse savings institution will be happy to provide you with information on this.

4. Registering with the Alumni Office

If you wish to stay in touch with Freie Universität and receive updated information on a regular basis, please use the registration form to sign up with our Alumni Office. Registration is free of charge.

You can learn more about the many activities of the Alumni Office and the Research Alumni Program directly via the office’s website.
