Dear FU Berlin Partners, Alumni and Friends,
You might find this edition of our newsletter a bit different! No wonder, because it is a special year!
We are very happy, excited and proud that we are celebrating the ten-year anniversary of our Cairo Liaison Office. Ever since our Cairo office was founded in 2010 on the premises of the DAAD Cairo Office, we have witnessed many historical developments not only regionally but also globally due to the recent events that have been affecting the whole world. Over the years, the FU Berlin Cairo Liaison Office has been actively working on establishing and strengthening collaborations between Freie Universität Berlin and its partner universities in the region while keeping track of scientific developments. While the past ten years have proven that work in this region remains challenging at times, it is, however, very fulfilling and rewarding in many other times.
Most evidently, researchers from all around the world have witnessed limited or complete interruption of their mobility due to COVID-19 and hence part of their activities has been put on hold over the past seven months. Nevertheless, the current crisis has also revealed that there is a mounting necessity of sustained cross-border research networks, which are crucial for academic and research institutions to complement their expertise and scientific reach across closed borders.
Having said that, we are delighted to organize the Webinar: “International academic collaboration: the backdoor remedy to a global crisis?!” which will take place on Tuesday, October 13th, 2020 from 2.00pm till 3.30pm.
Together with our esteemed panelists from our distinguished partner universities from Egypt and Lebanon, we will try to shed some light on the efforts that have been exerted as well as the challenges that have been faced during these unprecedented times by researchers and higher education institutions alike.
